High-Profile Auckland Roading Project Recognised in Australian Awards

One of Auckland’s most high-profile roading projects – the upgrade of Spaghetti Junction – has won an Australasian design award for the rehabilitation of the existing bridges which are part of the first stage of works completed in 2005.

Beca won the award, in the bridge maintenance and rehabilitation category, at the Austroads conference in Perth last week. Austroads is the association of Australian and New Zealand road transport and traffic authorities.

The award recognised Beca’s design work in widening and retrofitting the Khyber Pass Viaduct in a congested motorway environment.

The project was delivered by the Freeflow Alliance, which comprises Transit New Zealand as the client; Beca as the designers, and Fletcher Construction and Higgins Contractors as the builders.

The upgrade of Spaghetti Junction, which is in its final stages, is one project among several that are aimed at addressing Auckland’s road congestion. About 200,000 vehicles a day use the junction.
