Governor General to be guest of honour

2 October 2006

Governor General to be guest of honour at Roxburgh 50 years commemorative day

The Honourable Anand Satyanand PCNZM, New Zealand's Governor General, is to be the guest of honour at the Roxburgh Dam 50 year commemorative open day on 21 October.

The Roxburgh Dam and Power Station is New Zealand's longest-serving large hydro-electric scheme. Commissioned in 1956 after four difficult years of construction, the 320 megawatt Roxburgh Power Station was the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, producing enough renewable electricity to power around 200,000 homes.

David Baldwin, Contact Energy's Chief Executive, said he was delighted to welcome The Honourable Anand Satyanand to the dam.

"We feel it is appropriate that the Governor General has agreed to be the guest of honour, as the dam was originally constructed and operated by the Crown," he said.

"The Roxburgh Dam has made a huge contribution to New Zealand over the last 50 years and we look forward to hosting the Honourable Anand Satyanand on a tour of the dam and introducing him to Contact's Roxburgh staff."

The open day will run from 11am - 4pm on 21 October. All locals and ex-employees are invited to attend.

Anybody wishing to find out more about the open day can contact Cathy at the Roxburgh Dam on 0800 4ROX50 (0800476950) or visit
