Holcim newsletter provides summary of Weston Option

Holcim (New Zealand) Ltd has this week distributed nearly 8000 copies of its October newsletter to residents of Oamaru, Weston, Enfield, Ngapara, Windsor and surrounding areas.

The newsletter summarises the information presented at the Weston Option Information Open Day, held in Oamaru on 16 September. The newsletter also addresses some of the questions that came through at the Information Open Day as well as questions that local people have been asking at personal meetings, or via letters, emails and phone calls.

"People had a lot of questions about transport, among other things, and were generally supportive of the proposal to use rail to transport the cement from the plant to a deepwater port," says Paul Commons, General Manager, Strategy & Development.

The October newsletter includes a summary of information regarding the Weston Option quarries, transport effects, noise effects, air effects, ecological effects, Holcim policy regarding community liaison, as well as details regarding the company¹s environmental performance.

So far Holcim has completed seven information sheets, which have been made publicly available, on: * The consultation process * The Weston Option overview * Construction * Noise * Transport * Air * Ecology

An information sheet on the Weston Option quarries is now being prepared and should be available in early November. Following that, information sheets will be prepared on: the Windsor sand pit and Ngapara coal pit; servicing options (water, power, sewerage); and the social impact of building and operating a cement plant and quarries. These information sheets are expected to be available in late November or early December.

The resource consent applications for the Weston Option cement plant and associated quarries and pits are expected to be lodged in early 2007.
