The 76 chip shops from around the country competed against more than 500 shops to be named regional finalists in the Competition, which hunts for New Zealand’s healthiest, tastiest and crispiest chips.

Goodman Fielder Commercial General Manager Sales and Marketing, Graeme Laurence, said the regional finalists are now in the running to become a regional winner or potentially take out the top spot as the country’s top chippie.

“While public text voting determined the top 20 shops for each of the Competition’s six regions, a mystery judging process whittled those numbers down to a combined total of 76 finalists.

“The judging panel looked at a range of criteria including chip freshness and colour, shop cleanliness and customer service.

“But a core component of the judging was the fat content of the chips each shop served up. To check this, a chip sample was taken from each shop and sent away for fat analysis at an AgriQuality laboratory.”

Graeme said the nutrition component reflects the aim of the Chip Group - an industry collaboration that has been in place for almost a decade to lower fat levels in chips.

“The group, which includes The National Heart Foundation of New Zealand has been working together to lower the fat content of New Zealanders’ favourite takeaway meal.

“The judges were, therefore, looking for chips that have been cooked using the Heart Foundation’s recommended frying techniques, which can reduce the fat content of chips by up to 20 percent.”

The Crisco Best New Zealand Chip Shop Competition 2006 is the country’s only national chip shop competition and is this year supported by Goodman Fielder Commercial, Huhtamaki, Bakels, McCain, Mr Chips, Potato Growers of New Zealand and the Heart Foundation.

As the main sponsor, Goodman Fielder Commercial is supporting the event under the new Crisco Oils brand.

The regional winners and the national winner are expected to be announced on 22 November.
