Commitment to exports positive

Business NZ is welcoming the Government’s commitment to exporting and its intention to work closely with the business sector over Export Year 2007.

Business NZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly says New Zealand’s relatively small domestic market brings a challenge to increase our export performance.

“There are huge opportunities in new and established export markets, and the Government’s commitment to Export Year 2007 is constructive,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“There are three areas where Government input can be very useful.

“First, assistance ‘on the ground’ in overseas markets is highly valued by New Zealand exporters.

“Second, facilitation of businesses and business groups working together to achieve clustering power and joint marketing approaches is also extremely positive.

“And third, business also values general policies that help all companies grow – for example, lower tax, improved skills education and so on - so that more of them can make the step towards exporting.

“It’s important that the Government continues to work with the business community in developing a comprehensive Export Year work programme for 2007.”
