$1 City to City Bus Fares Hit South Island

Media Release 11 February 2007

$1 City to City Bus Fares Hit South Island

Thousands of South Island commuters will now benefit from now cheaper bus fares, some as low as $1, thanks to a new bus service nakedbus.com.

nakedbus.com, famous for its $1 fares, and buoyed by revenue growth of 20 percent per month, launched a South Island bus service today – bringing much needed competition to the South Island market.

nakedbus.com, established last year in the North Island, uses an innovative business model providing low cost, city to city travel for as little as $1 per ride.

Thousands of kiwis have taken advantage of the super cheap fares with nakedbus.com forced to add more routes and buses to keep up with the demand.

With the business growing at a rate of 5 percent per week, nakedbus.com can now offer the same bargain fares to the South Island - in the process, creating New Zealand’s second national bus carrier.

Based on hugely successful British transport models like Easyjet, Nakedbus.com cuts the overhead costs from the ticketing process by providing ‘internet only’ ticketing and eliminating the need for call centres.

While consumers use the online ticketing option resulting savings are passed onto the travellers allowing each bus trip to offer dramatically reduced fares. Internet traffic to the site is growing rapidly with 5000 unique visitors per week visiting nakedbus.com online.

“It was always our intention to offer a low cost national bus service to New Zealanders but we were thrilled at how quickly Kiwis responded allowing us to bring our expansion plans forward.

“With this extended service we will now be offering 30 buses covering 20 routes with 150 plus destinations! We will keep driving costs down to provide the cheapest fares possible making travel accessible to a whole new market."

Nuttall says nakedbus.com brings a much needed boost to city to city public transport and tourism infrastructure in New Zealand. He believes our public transport system needs to be more attractive to commuters by providing low cost, convenient and reliable alternatives such as those provided by nakedbus.com.

As the country’s fastest growing bus service nakedbus.com is not only good for kiwis’ wallets but also the environment. Anecdotal evidence to date shows that around 10% of nakedbus.com users had previously driven cars.
