Awards programme highlights quality builders

New Zealand’s largest Awards programme highlights quality builders

Call for entries in the Registered Master Builders 2007 House of the Year
and RMB Commercial Project Awards

Entries for New Zealand’s premier building Awards programme - the Registered Master Builders 2007 House of Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards - close on Friday 23 February. With principal sponsor PlaceMakers the Awards are now in their 17th year recognising excellence, quality, and innovation in the building industry.

The Awards offer builders the chance to prove their place in the highly competitive building industry. With a slightly softer building market, a win on either a local or national level is a great way for builders to differentiate themselves from their competition.

The highly respected Awards programme attracted a record 706 entries last year and organisers expect numbers are likely to increase again in 2007, due in part to the introduction of several new categories.

A new structure in the PlaceMakers Renovation category has been introduced based on last year’s member feedback. The new award categories will better reflect the value of projects in the renovation category.

They are:

  • PlaceMakers Renovation Award up to $250,000

  • PlaceMakers Renovation Award $250,000 - $500,000 (new)

  • PlaceMakers Renovation Award over $500,000 (new)

The above categories are open to standalone kitchen and bathroom renovations.

Registered Master Builders Federation chief executive Pieter Burghout says he’s excited about the 2007 Awards programme.

“This Awards programme is hugely valuable to our members and to the industry as a whole as it helps ensure our members stand apart from everyone else in the market. Every year the standard of entries continues to improve and we’re looking forward to another great year.”

PlaceMakers chief executive David Edwards is also looking forward to another successful competition.

“The House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards are a great way to celebrate the quality and standard of building and construction in New Zealand, and we are proud to once again be the major supporter”.

Winner of the 2006 PlaceMakers Supreme Award and House of the Year, N.T Stevens Limited, said winning the Award for their spectacular renovation of a two storey residence in Wellington has most certainly increased his business.

“Winning this Award is a pat on the back for us and an acknowledgement of our ability to produce results of the highest standard. We are only a small company, but it is nice to be appreciated for your work and to have people realise you are good at what you do,” says N.T Stevens.

The winner of the RMB 2006 Commercial Project of the Year, Naylor Love Limited, who have been category winners three times and won the supreme Award twice - the first time in 2000 - acknowledge that winning these Awards have measurably assisted in the growth of their company.

“Since winning this Award we have certainly enjoyed a higher national profile, but our main motivation for entering is the opportunity to benchmark our projects against those of our peers,” says Trevor Kempton, managing director of Naylor Love Limited.

The Registered Master Builders PlaceMakers House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards are structured on two levels - local and national. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners are determined in 20 local competitions around New Zealand using a points-based system.

The top 100 local Gold Award winners become national finalists, announced on 8 August. These national finalists are then re-judged by a different panel of judges who determine the overall national winners.

The national winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland at the end of October.

The House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards are made possible through the support of principal sponsor PlaceMakers; and supporting sponsors James Hardie, GIB Living Solutions, Pink Batts Ultra (Tasman Insulation), Mico Bathrooms, Housing New Zealand Corporation, Nulook, Future-Proof Building, Seismic and the Department of Building and Housing.
