Christchurch’s Second Bunnings Warehouse Takes Shape

Bunnings Warehouse Marshlands is on track for an early 2008 opening, with construction well underway on the new site on Marshlands Road in Shirley.

The store is beginning to take shape with the steel framework complete, and further work on the building in progress.

Bunnings Warehouse Marshlands will be the largest store in the new Home Base development on Marshlands Rd, with a total size of around 11,000 square metres.

When completed, the Bunnings Warehouse store will employ around 120 team members and generate approximately $3 million in wages annually. Recruiting for positions including administration, department specialists, and people with trade backgrounds such as builders, plumbers and electricians will begin shortly.

Bunnings New Zealand General Manager, Brad Cranston, is very pleased with the construction progress.

“We are very excited about opening our Marshlands Rd store. The team at Calder Stewart Construction, our builders, are going very well, and it’s great to see the steel framework go up at the new site.

“Bunnings Warehouse Marshlands will boost the local economy through the creation of more than 100 new jobs, and will also give residents access to the widest range of home improvement products at the lowest prices guaranteed”.

“The creation of these new jobs will not be the only positive impact on the community. Bunnings is committed to supporting the communities in which we operate, with team members encouraged to take an active role by supporting charities and community groups.”

The new store will carry around 45,000 product lines across a wide range of home improvement categories and will feature a hardware store and garden centre plus covered timber drive-through for trade and DIY customers, and shared use of 382 carparking spaces.

Bunnings Warehouse Marshlands will also offer customers services such as a hire shop, café, special order facilities and a playground for children. The store will also run free in-store DIY clinics every weekend, with classes to suit all skill levels.

Since entering the New Zealand market in 2001, through the acquisition of Benchmark Building Supplies, the company has quickly grown to include 14 large format Bunnings Warehouses, in addition to 25 small format Bunnings stores throughout New Zealand.

Bunnings Warehouse Marshlands will be Bunnings’ third South Island store. There are also other new stores planned throughout New Zealand including warehouses in Nelson and Wellington.
