TrustPower: Kaiwera Downs Wind Farm Applications

TrustPower Lodges Kaiwera Downs Wind Farm Consent Applications

TrustPower has lodged applications with the Gore District and Southland Regional Councils for resource consents to build a wind farm of up to 240MW at Kaiwera Downs near Gore.

The proposed wind farm, which will be built entirely on privately owned farmland, will have a maximum of 83 turbines, each with a maximum height of 145 metres.

The wind farm will be contained within an area of 2,568 hectares, and require a transmission line of either 3.6km or 4.1km (depending upon option chosen) to connect to existing Transpower 220kv transmission lines.

TrustPower Chief Executive Keith Tempest says the proposed Kaiwera Downs wind farm would be built in stages, with a projected total cost $440 million, and a capacity to supply, once fully built, the equivalent of 113,000 homes.

"This represents another stage in TrustPower's ongoing development of sustainable generation, built close to demand and utilising existing transmission lines.

We expect that in addition to enhancing lower South Island security of supply and contributing to New Zealand's overall sustainability goals, the Kaiwera Downs wind farm will during its construction generate more than $50 million income for the local community".
