Hawaiian Tropic Sunscreen Settles w Com Commission

News release
15 February 2008

A settlement has been reached between the makers of Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen products and the Commerce Commission regarding four batches of product previously sold into New Zealand.

Prior to the settlement, the manufacturer of Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen products, Tanning Research Labs Inc, had already confirmed that all Hawaiian Tropic sunscreens currently sold into the New Zealand market have passed screener testing against the non-mandatory joint Australian/New Zealand standard for SPF testing and their packaging has also been updated to address issues under the Fair Trading Act identified by the Commerce Commission.

Patrick Lewis, Vice President of Hawaiian Tropic’s International Division said the issues identified by the Commission regarding the four products with the specific batch codes listed below were immediately and voluntarily corrected by the company last year as soon as the Commission made it aware of the issues with the non-mandatory New Zealand standard which differs from that in other countries.

“As a global leader in sun protection the efficacy of our products is paramount. We regret any confusion which may have been caused and can assure Kiwis enjoying the summer that all Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen products sold into New Zealand are effective for use as described on the labels and packaging. They should always be used along with hats, shirts, sunglasses and a rest in the shade in the middle of the day to offer the safest sun protection.”
