Chairman of IOG appointed

Telecom's Board today announced the appointment of the chairman of the Independent Oversight Group (IOG), the group established to ensure that Telecom complies with its Operational Separation Undertakings.

The IOG will be chaired by retired High Court Judge, Hon Barry Paterson, CNZM, OBE, QC.

Barry Paterson has a distinguished background in corporate, commercial, trust and property law. During his time in practice he was a director of many companies including five NZX listed companies.

Barry Paterson became a silk in 1993. In 1996 he was appointed a Judge of the High Court and was a member of the Auckland High Court bench until he retired in 2004.

Currently he is chairman of the Sports Disputes Tribunal of New Zealand, the New Zealand Press Council, and Electronic Transaction Services Limited.

He is a fellow of the Arbitrators and Mediators Institute of New Zealand, and a member of the New Zealand Bar Association.

The remaining members of the IOG will be announced on the completion of their appointments. Along with the chairman, the IOG will include a further two independent members, and two non-independent members. The Commerce Commission is being consulted during the IOG appointment process.

Telecom chairman Wayne Boyd said the IOG would be governed by a majority of independent members and would report on Telecom's compliance with the Separation Undertakings to both Telecom's Board and the Commerce Commission.

"The appointment of Barry Paterson as chairman of the IOG is another important milestone under Operational Separation," Mr Boyd said.
