Dunedin’s Southern Colour Print (SCP) has delivered a world-class export security printing performance with its production of the recent Singapore Post Collectors’ Sheet.

Entailing the precise reproduction of individual stamps from the 2007 Singapore Post Definitive Stamp series, the job has reinforced the company’s international status in this elite sector of the industry, says SCP managing director Sean McMahon.

“Combining all 14 products together on the same sheet presented the challenge of making sure the colours of each stamp were the same as the individually-produced product,” he says.

“Embedding the security features in the product posed a few technical challenges for the production staff.

“The skill level at the perforation stage was also a particular challenge. The collectors’ sheet required eight passes through the perforators -- which is the most SCP has ever performed on one product.”

Mr McMahon says the product has been “very well received” by the Singapore philatelic community, which he describes as “the ultimate test”.

“Both Singapore Post and SCP are very happy with the result given the complexity of the job. Of particular satisfaction to SCP was the pride employees who worked on the project felt as a result of completing the project successfully.

“Singapore Post also accepts tenders from a group of approved producers worldwide. On this particular occasion the tender from SCP met the delivery, cost and quality requirements of the tender.”

A total of 8000 collectors’ sheets were printed by SCP, in addition to the 22 million individual stamps in the series produced annually. These were offset lithographic printed on 104gsm gummed stamp paper via a Heidelberg 102 CD Speedmaster and perforated on a Bickel Perforator.

Both the collectors’ sheet and high-quality credit card work have been entered in the security printing section of this year’s Pride In Print Awards by SCP. The Awards are being presented at Auckland’s SkyCity Convention Centre on May 16.
