Myjobspace.co.nz shakes up online employment market

The Net Guide, People’s Choice Web Awards 2008 were held in Auckland on Thursday evening, May 8 and for Gary Collins, creator and Managing Director of myjobspace.co.nz, it was the night he finally got to say “I told you so!” to those that didn’t think he’d stand a chance competing with job sites owned by wealthy overseas media outlets.

Going out on a limb just 18 months ago, Mr Collins launched myjobspace in a bid to “Slash employment and recruitment costs”. Mr Collins had his skeptics, but stuck to his guns. “To have myjobspace recognised as a finalist in the Best Employment Site category makes all the effort worth it. To build ourselves up in just 18 months to where we now have more than 57,000 online job-listings is a tremendous result.”

For a number of years he was utterly frustrated by the unjustifiable, escalating costs of advertising for jobs through the local, overseas-owned media outlets. Myjobspace was launched and the mission was to develop the most affordable and effective job-marketing platform for the benefit of employers and job hunters.

Mr Collins believes “Prices for services on other job sites have been kept artificially high because they are owned by multi-national publishing companies trying to maintain lost revenues as classified advertising rapidly moves from newspapers to the instant interactivity of internet marketing”.

“Kiwis have responded well to having a locally owned and operated site. We’ve been listening to our locals in the job market and have been tweaking things along the way.”

A re-designed site has just been released, making it even more user friendly and interactive for both employers and job hunters. With support for promotions such as “Fanuary” and the just released “myBADjobspace” competition, there are yet bigger and better things to come for this Kiwi owned site. “For a Kiwi owned jobsite, built by Kiwis, for Kiwis, it’s a really big deal to be recognised alongside the multi-nationals,” Mr Collins said after the awards last evening.

Myjobspace operations manager Stephan Heppleston says, “When we heard about the nominations and that we were a finalist - that’s enough”.

“We felt like we’d already won! It’s powerful, it’s another little tool in the tool box and everything makes a difference.”
