Amenity Tree Consultants donated two of the ten native trees planted at Cornwall Park to commemorate the ten life members of the New Zealand Arboricultural Association (NZAA) on Arbor Day (5th June), which was also World Environment Day.
The sunny weather played its part in an enjoyable morning of tree planting in the park adjacent to Puriri Drive, which was an appropriate location as both native trees donated by the company were Puriri (Vitex lucens).
Other members of the NZAA, including the President – Richard Wanhill and Vice- President – Lisa Sanderson were on hand to help plant the trees and mark the occasion.
Arbor Day was first proposed as a tree planting holiday in the United States in 1872 and the first Arbor Day held in 1874. By 1894 each state celebrated the day.
New Zealand first official Arbor Day was celebrated in Wellington in August 1892, with the planting of Pohutukawa and Norfolk Island Pines along Thorndon Esplanade. Given that the traditional August date for Arbor Day was rather late for tree planting it was changed in 1977 to 5th June.
