Akaroa’s French Farm sold to family group

2 September 2008 - The picturesque and popular French Farm Winery, Restaurant and Function Centre near Akaroa, Banks Peninsula has been sold to a family group keen to build the business further.

Marketed by Bruce Page of Harcourts Grenadier Christchurch City office, French Farm features a stunning architecturally-designed Tuscan-style building which contains a large restaurant and state-of-the-art kitchen, with a successful pizzeria built into the hillside alongside – all set on a beautifully landscaped 1.45ha site.

Mr Page says French Farm was sold as a going concern with significant advance bookings for weddings, conferences and other special occasions along with a team of experienced and skilled staff.

The new owners, who will take over on 1 October from the former owners who are now preparing for semi-retirement, are an extended family group, some of whom have hospitality industry experience, Mr Page says. They are confident they can grow the business further.

Established in 1990, French Farm’s distinctive French-provincial style restaurant and idyllic surroundings have helped it earn an enviable reputation locally and from visitors from further afield both for special occasions and for more casual dining.

The venue’s restaurant can cater for up to 120 diners inside and numerous tables in an outdoor dining area as well. Above is space for meetings and small conferences, or alternatively for converting into a small apartment, while alongside is La Pizzeria, which offers open-air casual dining for those who want a less formal meal.

“Add in its own wine label, sea views, beautiful well-maintained gardens, an international size petanque court and sweeping lawns with a helicopter pad and French Farm is a unique opportunity which there was a lot of interest in and which the new owners are delighted with.”

Situated on French Farm Valley Road, just an hour from Christchurch and close to popular Akaroa, French Farm was listed for sale at $2.2 million plus GST (if any) including the equipment used in an onsite winery, however that equipment ended up been sold separately.
