Tainted Milk Lawsuit Begun Against Sanlu

Press Release 2 October 2008 - SCOOP, RNZ

Tainted Milk Lawsuit Begun Against Sanlu

A Chinese family has begun proceedings in the Chinese court system to sue Sanlu for compensation after their baby fell ill from contaminated milk formula.

The Wall Street Journal reports today that Beijing‘s Deheng Law Office filed the suit last week. The action against dairy company Shijiazhuang Sanlu Group Co, more than 40% owned by Fonterra, is on behalf of the family of a sick baby who developed kidney stones. The filing is not publicly available but it is known that the suit has yet to be accepted by the court.

Solicitor Mr Zhang said the family is seeking 150,000 yuan (NZ$30,000) compensation for actual costs incurred. Liability court actions have not been common in China but are now increasing as the legal system develops, a US law firm dealing with China quoted by the Journal says.

Meanwhile, the Sanlu website is displaying a message saying it is down due to overwhelming user traffic.
