Glass Or Two With Your Dozen?

Pride In Print media release (April 2009)

Glass Or Two With Your Dozen?

Discerning beer consumers have reacted positively to a packaging initiative which has seen two beer glasses seamlessly combined with a standard dozen box of Export 33.

The idea of bringing bottle and glass straight to the consumer was conceptualised and designed after considerable experimentation by Production Partners’ Lee Shaw. Subsequently the functional point-of-sale creation has proven a hit in the commercial marketplace and is now a contender for a Pride In Print Award.

“The packaging needed to be strong enough to hold and protect the glasses as well as follow the brand in terms of style,” says Mr Shaw.

“Crucially, it had to easily attach to the existing pack of beer and all of this had to fit within the budget too!

“We have had very good feedback and subsequently even made a standalone version for a conference that was used as a giveaway as a glass pack only.”

With beer being a product Mr Shaw says he has “a passion for”, the inspiration for the concept came readily.

“I suppose it was one of those things that just jumped out at me and made sense, and was within all the realms of production and cost.

“My key point of difference with a lot of my clients is what I call 'paper engineering' and my Website will soon be up and running to illustrate and promote this.”

However, then the concept had to be turned into reality.

“The production of this job needed to have four different suppliers which I co-ordinated individually. So I wanted them all within close proximity and with familiarity to each other so I could make the deadline and oversee each stage easily.

“I have to say that Newton Cutting Formes played an important part in helping with the construction of the pack. I went backwards and forwards to Newtons with my dielines and initial mock-ups and between us we managed to fine-tune the finished product.”

Printed four-colour process and gloss-laminated one side on 170gsm sumit gloss stock, the package was line-mounted onto 212E flute, then diecut formed and finished.

Production Partners and team will find out on May 8 at the Wellington Conventional Centre if they have wrapped up a medal or commendation in the packaging structural design corrugated cases category
