News Release 15 May 2009

Top Wellington Hotel Wins Two Awards in a Week!

Wellington’s leading five-star hotel, the Bolton Hotel, is celebrating after one of its chefs, Jeremy Singleton, won the Chef of the Capital Competition at the weekend Food Show at the Stadium, and the Hotel took out the prestigious Team Gold Award at last night’s Gold Awards.

Jeremy, who has worked at the Bolton Hotel’s restaurant Bisque for two years, beat eight other chefs in the competition, billed by organisers as the ‘search for Wellington's absolutely positively best craftsperson in the kitchen’. The competition saw Jeremy prepare a three course meal in three hours, all in front of a packed crowd. Each of the three dishes prepared was comprised solely of local produce and was matched with local wines.

Stephen Morris, Head Chef at Bisque said: “We are really pleased that Jeremy won this award, gaining the recognition he deserves. It bodes well for Jeremy’s future that he is one of the youngest chefs at age 24 to have ever won this competition, not to mention that this is only the second cooking competition he has ever entered. This title also reflects the high quality of our staff at Bisque, and the Bolton Hotel overall.”

During the competition, which was judged by chefs Jeremy had to prepare a cold entrée, hot main and hot dessert. His winning meal comprised a Waikanae Crab and Prawn medallion entrée, Wairarapa Venison main, and for dessert, Kapiti Figs stuffed with Raspberries and poached in rose water syrup. Jeremy was also responsible for the selection of a local wine to match each course.

The revelry continued as the Bolton Hotel took out the Team Gold category at the 11th Annual Gold Awards, held at the TSB Arena last night. The Gold Awards are about celebrating and profiling successful businesses in the Wellington region and the outstanding owners, managers and teams that create that success. In winning the Team Gold category, the Bolton Hotel beat out other finalists iServe and Industrial Research Limited.

Warwick Angus, Managing Director of the Bolton Hotel said: “We could not be prouder, having won two awards in less than a week. Receiving two such awards is a huge honour, not only for Jeremy and Bisque, but for the entire Bolton Hotel team. We are extremely proud of our five-star facilities, and the team; both front of house and behind the scenes, that make it happen. Receiving recognition of our staff and services is consistent with our desire to deliver an incomparable level of accommodation in a friendly and professional setting.”

Bisque on Bolton will be offering Jeremy’s winning menu, so that diners can experience the award-winning meal, with matching wines, of one of Wellington’s finest young chefs. Reservations can be made by phoning the Bolton Hotel.
