Partnership Key To Award-Winning Project

An energy efficiency project that displaces nearly 4 million litres pa of LPG with ‘re-cycled’ energy has taken a top honour at the 2009 EECA Energywise awards.

The project involved the design, installation and commissioning of specialised heat recovery plant at Winstone Pulp International’s (WPI) Karioi pulp mill in Ohakune. The new plant has cut the company’s C02 emissions by 6,000 tonnes pa.

The project won the large business category of the 2009 Energywise Awards which were announced tonight. It also was highly commended in the innovation category.

WPI pulp manager, Paul Saunders, said this award-winning project is the latest in a line of works undertaken for WPI by Energy For Industry (EFI).

“The benefits from this latest initiative only came about after EFI encouraged us to undergo an energy audit, the costs of which were subsidised by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

“This demonstrates the value of an energy audit,” Saunders said.

“It was a very cost-effective exercise that has helped us make quite major energy savings and has paid significant strategic dividends.”

EFI spokesperson, Grant Smith, said the new heat recovery plant can deliver up to six megawatts of WPI’s process heat requirements from low grade heat that was not previously used at the mill.

Results from the award-winning heat recovery plant are exceeding initial expectations, Smith said.

“It’s very satisfying to work with a long-term partner like WPI and to be able to generate for them ongoing benefits that have a tangible impact on their bottom line.”

EFI specialises in developing and supplying sophisticated on-site energy solutions with a focus on energy efficiency, enhanced environmental outcomes and reduced energy costs.

Established in 2000, the company has invested more than $35 million in energy plant at sites throughout the country.
