Auckland man gets big tax refund

Auckland man gets big tax refund

An Auckland man is $40,000 better off – having just been told he’s up for one of the biggest tax refunds so far in New Zealand.

Business consultant Antony Taylor says he was completely taken by surprise with the outcome of his application through the online tax refund agency MyTax.co.nz.

“At first when they rang I thought it was a wind up,” he says. “I wasn’t even going to apply, a friend told me to and after consideration I thought it’s not a lot to pay – just 12.5% if I get anything back.”

My Taylor intends having a big night out and then paying off some of his mortgage. He says he’s gone from being extremely sceptical about tax refunds to encouraging anyone he talks to into giving it a go.

MyTax.co.nz is one of the leading online tax refund businesses and delivers refunds to 85% of applicants. The past five years of tax payments are checked at no charge and the average refund is $489.

Spokesman Lester Binns says word is getting out about tax refunds and the advantage of using a company to apply.

“Doing your refund directly through the IRD comes with the risk of having to pay tax if you owe anything, he explains. “MyTax.co.nz totally removes this risk and the likelihood of getting a refund almost 80%. “

MyTax.co.nz employs 26 staff, and works three shifts at its central Nelson office from 7am to 8pm. It is currently advertising to employ further staff for refund processing. Most of the applications for refunds come from Auckland clients.
