August 20 BNZ Weekly Overview

Welcome to the August 20 2009 issue of the BNZ Weekly Overview.

The only interesting data releases this week appeared last Friday when we saw confirmation that house prices are rising again in New Zealand and that retail spending is growing again. The numbers certainly don’t indicate that strong growth lies just ahead with booming house prices. But we have easily passed the worst point for the economy and should expect to see a continuation of the trends we have been writing about since March. Namely – slowly rising fixed interest rates and good support for the NZ dollar along with a housing market recovery that soon will see more activity for builders.

This week we discuss what well capitalised businesses should be doing in this environment –basically taking advantage of the bargains on offer to secure better market share and profit opportunities for the future.
