Instant Verification Of ID Documents Available

Instant Verification Of ID Documents Available To Liquor Retailers

A Lower Hutt company, Millennium Technology Limited (MillenTech), is currently holding field trials of the first New Zealand real time ID authentication system, developed to help licensed retailers verify the age of patrons.

PASSMATE® is being trialled with the help of Super Liquor and Cellar Room Karori and delivers real time, automated and accurate authentication by reporting the results on the reflected differences between what is known about an identity document and the actual identity type being presented.

Currently, methods of identification rely on individuals to determine the authenticity of ID documents by visual inspection. An effective frontline document inspector must undergo considerable training and usually has only a few seconds to make a judgement.

Chairman of MillenTech, Ron DeDera, says, “Our research, including a market focus symposium using an industry psychologist, has recognized the challenges the industry has with vetting underage patrons. The technology available to produce quality false IDs (has become more ready available), and sales staff are more open to challenge and confrontation when asking for ID”.

“Taking on board these requirements, MillenTech has introduced PASSMATE® as a tool to help the industry deal with the dilemma of underage drinking and the associated social cost.” PASSMATE® uses the HANZ 18+ and NZ Drivers Licence as these are the two most common required forms of photo identification used when purchasing alcohol or entering a licensed establishment. The system is robust, designed to handle normal variations of documents accounting for dirt, wear, cracking and other forms of degradation found in the real world, yet still correctly identify using a mix of propriety security formats and light including near infrared.

MillenTech is well known in the finance and banking industry for its focused work in developing secure PIN management systems, with expertise in secure encryption, cryptology and identity authentication systems, including boarder management. It is New Zealand owned and operated since 1996.
