Building the warehouse industry without borders

The art of storekeeping goes back to the time when humans realized they needed to store food. If this art were not mastered, the repercussions for people would have been disastrous.

“Storekeeping or warehousing is no less important today. A warehouse is one of the major components of the overall business supply chain, whether goods are moved to other countries or stored for the domestic market,” ” says Norman MacIver, owner and web host of new company Training for Industry.

Recognising a training gap in the market for people working in warehousing worldwide to learn and be certified in an affordable and convenient way, Norman and wife Linda have set up trainingforindustry.com.

Norman’s background is in trades training and the couple has successfully run businesses in security services and real estate previously.

“Employers have been telling us that training from tertiary providers was proving to be particularly expensive, especially in this recession. If the minimum numbers of students failed to turn up to a pre-booked training seminar, the employers whose staff did turn up were still responsible for the total costs.

“Other online courses offer single modules, such as health and safety, and often without assessment of how well a student understands the information. Our courses provide immediate feedback about how the student is succeeding,” says Mr MacIver.

Students complete the training material at work or home in eight modules that comprise a comprehensive package of subjects in all aspects of distribution. When students have passed all eight, their Certificate of Proficiency in Storekeeping is posted to them. More courses will be available in time.

The qualification teaches industry skills and knowledge, for newcomers as well as those ready to progress into specific careers from storeman all the way to positions in senior management.

Mr MacIver says, “Currently we have employers who reimburse their staff based on successful module completion. In some instances, pay increases have been negotiated after employees have completed and received their certificate.

“We help warehousing businesses succeed by training staff to be their best. When people know how to do their jobs well they enjoy work and everyone benefits!”
