Waimea Wines Awarded in Sydney
Waimea’s Chardonnay 2008 and Bolitho SV Pinot Noir 2007 have just been awarded Blue-Gold Medals at the prestigious Sydney International Wine Competition. The Waimea Dry Riesling 2006 was not only also awarded a Blue-Gold Medal, but additionally included in the Top 100 Wines of the Show.
The Sydney International Wine Competition is unique
amongst international wine shows in that the wines are first
of all judged on wine quality before being submitted to
judging alongside food. Only those wines that score high
enough to be awarded a Gold Medal in each judging qualify
for the unique Blue-Gold (or double Gold) Medal. The 100
wines which score the highest aggregate points in both
judgings are then included in the Top 100 Wines of the Show.
Trophy winners from the Sydney International Wine
Competition will be announced in February.
Winemaker
Mike Brown is delighted with these results. “Over the last
18 months Waimea has gathered 31 golds and 5 trophies across
6 wine styles – most of these in 2009 alone. It was also a
great thrill to win gold for Waimea Sauvignon Blanc 2009,
the same Chardonnay as above plus the Waimea 2008
Gewurztraminer at the recent Air NZ National Wine Awards. It
shows the strength and consistency of the Nelson region to
produce award-winning wines across the varietal range and
I’m especially proud of the Waimea winery and vineyard
team.”
