'All you can eat' YouTube for Orcon customers

‘All you can eat’ YouTube for Orcon customers

Orcon customers are going to enjoy a great summer of video entertainment with the announcement that YouTube traffic from the ISP is zero rated until the end of January 2010.

From today Orcon customers can both download and upload as much as they want from the popular video content site without any fear of blowing out their data caps.

Until now Orcon customers have received zero-rated traffic from a selected range of popular New Zealand websites such as TVNZ and the company’s own email servers. YouTube is being temporarily included for the next two months.

Orcon chief executive Scott Bartlett says he is really excited about the move to include an international site of YouTube’s standing.

“YouTube is one of the hottest properties on the web – with an almost endless supply of content. It makes up a big chunk of our customer-base’s usage every month. With the school holidays looming and the festive season in full swing we’re expecting a big uptake from our customers.

“Streaming and downloading can rapidly chew through gigabytes of data so these holidays mums and dads can rest assured their data cap won’t take a beating. It is also a great opportunity for families to make and share their own holiday home movies with friends and family around the world.

“It’s our way of saying thank you to our customers and I reckon it’s a pretty good Christmas present for New Zealand households,” Bartlett says.

Any customers who sign up for Orcon broadband during the two month period also receive free YouTube data.

In addition to YouTube, current sites with zero rated traffic from Orcon are tvnz.co.nz, biggie.co.nz, thealist.co.nz, georgefm.co.nz and the George FM live stream, the Orcon mail servers and Orcon’s own website Orcon.net.nz.

Essentially any data used on these sites doesn’t count towards Orcon broadband users’ monthly data cap - it is ‘free data’. That includes any uploading, downloading, streaming, or just general surfing on the sites.
