Search engine marketing isn’t be all and end all

Search engine marketing isn’t the ‘be all and end all’ of online marketing

Small and medium business owners shouldn’t get too hung up on keywords and search engine marketing because customers use a number of search methods to find stuff they’re looking for.

Co-founder of New Zealand’s fastest growing online business directory Gopher.co.nz ,BJ Sveistrup, says potential customers use a number of search tactics such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Trade Me, links through customer, special interest and supplier websites and also reputable online internet directories like Gopher.

“Even if you stick with traditional search engine marketing, you will still struggle because social media and directory listings have a massive influence on your search engine ranking.

“Think of the sea dwelling Anemone which puts out tentacles that wave around in the currents to catch their food. Good, reputable websites like Trade Me and internet trade directories like Gopher.co.nz are like those tentacles.

“With more than 110,000 business listings on Gopher.co.nz, we know from experience that people want choice and convenience, so they will go where they can narrowly define their search, but still have a wide selection.

“The good news is that taking advantage of these other services costs very little or nothing at all, and you can do it yourself,” says Mr Sveistrup.
