NZ Magazines Expands Portfolio


APN News & Media Limited today announced its New Zealand Magazines division has acquired the licence to publish Pacific Magazines’ three core titles in New Zealand.

Under the agreement, which is to take effect from October 1, New Zealand Magazines will publish the weeklies, New Idea and That’s Life, and the monthly title, Girlfriend.

The move will extend New Zealand Magazines reach in new market segments, which will create great flexibility for advertisers.

“This licence will strengthen our portfolio and make New Zealand Magazines an even more attractive channel for both readers and advertisers,” APN New & Media chief executive, Brendan Hopkins, said today.

“The titles are complementary with our existing portfolio, and they will increase New Zealand Magazines’ unduplicated reach from 1.2 million New Zealanders to 1.5 million. Each title will retain its separate editorial focus.”

New Zealand Magazines currently publishes New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, the NZ Listener, Creme, Simply You and Simply You Living, and also has the media sales agency for Time magazine in New Zealand.

New Zealand Woman’s Weekly has a readership of 807,000 and is the leader among weekly magazine titles. NZ Listener is the most read weekly current affairs title, Creme is the highest-selling youth publication and Simply You is the country’s best-selling fashion magazine.

“The new titles added under licence will all fit well within our portfolio and extend APN’s multimedia strategy, ensuring we continue to service our markets with an even broader product suite for advertisers,” Mr Hopkins said.

“Building alliances will be a key part of APN’s future direction.”

Pacific Magazines NZ managing director, Georgina Brujic, said the licence arrangement represents a positive outcome for Pacific Magazines.

"We welcome the chance to work with APN in the New Zealand market. The move sets a foundation for growth for the brands and people at Pacific Magazines," she said.
