Fletcher and Leighton make shortlist for Waterview tunnel project

Nov. 15 (BusinessDesk) – Two tender consortia remain in the hunt to build Auckland’s Waterview Connection, the biggest and most complex roading project in New Zealand.

One consortium led by Fletcher Building and another led by Australian group Leighton Contractors Pty. Ltd have been shortlisted to construct the $2 billion 4.5km connection between the Southwestern motorway (SH20) at Mt Roskill with the Northwestern motorway at the Great North Road interchange.

The route includes 2.5km of two three lane road tunnels.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is running a tender process concurrently with its own application for designation and resource consents through the new national consenting process.

A board of inquiry is to hear all submissions on the project before a final outcome is known in July next year.

Construction of the connection is expected to employ up to 1000 people at its peak.

The successful tender will be awarded in late 2011 and is meant to finish in the 2015/16 financial year.

The Waterview Connection is the major component of Auckland’s Western Ring Route Road of National Significance, one of seven that the government has signaled as requiring priority treatment.

The connection will complete the last link between Manukau, Auckland, Waitakere and North Shore, while bypassing State Highway 1 and the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The Fletcher Construction consortium also includes McConnell Dowell, Obayashi Corp., PB New Zealand, Beca Infrastructures, and Tonkin and Taylor. Leighton’s consortium is made up Fulton Hogan, John Holland Pty., Aecom and Sinclair Knight Merz.

The consortia which missed out on the next stage of the tender process was Baulderstone Pty. Ltd., an Australian construction and infrastructure company.

Its partners were Bouygues Travaus Publics S.A., Hawkins Construction, HEB Construction, Opus International Consultants and URS New Zealand. (BusinessDesk)
