Spotless consortium in biggest ever win

Dec. 13 (BusinessDesk) - Cleaning, catering and building maintenance provider Spotless Group has won its largest ever contract, as part of a consortium chosen as preferred builder and operator of the New Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Australian-based Spotless, which is also listed on the NZX, has partnered with construction companies Hansen Yunchken and Leighton Contractors and Macquarie Capital in bidding for the public/private partnership (PPP), involving the South Australian government.

The contract is to finance, design, construct and manage the new hospital for 35 years with SA Health operating the hospital and providing all core clinical services including staffing, teaching and research.

Spotless says once the hospital is constructed it will provide “integrated facilities management and lifecycle asset management services” for about 30 years. Spotless managing director Josef Farnik says it will be Australia's largest and most technologically advanced hospital and is the largest single contract in his company's 64-year history.

“This is a landmark PPP in size and complexity” and is Spotless' ninth PPP project win.

The new hospital will have 800 beds, including 100 same-day beds, and will be able to cater to 800,000 admissions a year.

Spotless says it will employ more than 500 people in non-clinical roles including cleaning, catering and orderly services.

Work is expected to begin in the first half of 2011 with a proposed completion date in early 2016. Spotless shares hardly trade in New Zealand, last trading at $3.87 in September.

On the ASX, the shares ended last week at A$1.96 (NZ$2.58) just one cent off their 12-month low. Their 12-month high was A$3.23 in March.
