A Darling Marlborough Winemaker Nominated for Young Winemaker of the Year Awards 2011

The Wine Society has announced that Chris Darling of The Darling Wines has been nominated for their 2011 Young Winemaker of the Year awards. Now in their eleventh year, these awards aim to recognise and acknowledge the talents of the most exceptional young winemakers in Australia and New Zealand.

This year the awards have increased the age restriction from 30 to 35. Chris, aged 35 has said “I feel five years younger with the new changes and it gives a few more winemakers the opportunity to show their wines, which is great”.

Two other awards are also up for grabs as part of the nomination. The Members’ Choice Award, selected by Members of The Wine Society and the Sommeliers’ Choice Award, voted by a panel of key Australian sommeliers.

The top ten finalists for all three awards will be notified in mid-September, with the winners announced at the Young Winemaker of the Year 2011 event, held on the rooftop of Darling Harbour’s Coast Restaurant on November 18, 2011.

The Wine Society CEO, Daryl MacGraw says The Wine Society is proud to showcase emerging talents and support the grass roots development of this industry, remarking that “the calibre of the nominees over previous years is simply outstanding.”

He added: “Australia and New Zealand are continuing to produce such an incredible number of talented and innovative young winemakers that our antipodean wines are making a great name for themselves globally. We are thrilled to host a platform like this to showcase and honour burgeoning homegrown talent.”
