E3 launched its Board Dynamics survey on how chairpersons deal with adversity or crisis in our current economic troubled times

E3 launched its inaugural annual survey of board chairperson’s in New Zealand and Australia


Auckland, New Zealand, July 1, 2011: E3 Advisory Limited released its board survey to 20 board chairpersons in New Zealand and Australia. This year’s survey questions will examine what Chairpersons do differently in times of adversity and challenge. We will be seeking contributions from Chairpersons with different areas of experience to see them and their boards through economically challenging times.

At the beginning of 2011 there was a general sense that we were in, and heading further into a prolonged economic recession in New Zealand that was much greater than anything most Boards had managed before. Now, midway through the year, it is clear that even if the immediate sense of crisis is not certain, we are facing an indeterminate period of an indeterminate degree of adversity in New Zealand and Australia. This period will undoubtedly call on all the full engagement of Board members, their stamina, strategic and operational dexterity.

In the light of this, as part of E3’s work with Board members and Directors on their careers, we thought that it would be helpful to research what the most experienced Chairpersons do differently in adversity, be it at times of absolute crisis, or in just on-going difficult times. To do so we will be interviewing the Chairpersons of some of the top New Zealand and Australian Corporations, all of whom have managed through particular phases of adversity over recent years. For example these will include Theresa Gattung, Jane Diplock, Phillip Meyer, Sam Knowles, Wayne Boyd, Murray Jack and Rod Inglis. Our aim is to draw from them the lessons they learned which they are applying today.

E3 was founded in 2009 to give independent and informed advice to chairmen and directors on the effectiveness and impact of the board and its committees, and to offer a process which is flexible, forward looking, intellectually engaging and unbureaucratic.
