Celebrate the Perfect Pour in New Zealand

Celebrate the Perfect Pour in New Zealand

Come and watch 20 of the country’s most skilled and charming bartenders put their beer pouring skills to the test in the annual Stella Artois® Draught Masters New Zealand finals.

Contestants will decend on The Occidental Tavern Auckland for the New Zealand finals of the 2011 Stella Artois® World Draught Masters competition on Tuesday August 30th.

Now in its 15th year, the annual Stella Artois® World Draught Master competition, requires each of the finalists to perform the 9-Step Pouring Ritual. Each finalist will be judged on strict criteria for their precision, technique and presentation skills.

The winner will go on to represent New Zealand in the 2011 World Draught Masters Global Finals Buenos Aires, Argentina October 26th. New Zealand has won the World Draught Master title three times since the competition started. The current World Draught Master is Chris Myers who took the crown from the 2009 winner and Christchurch local, Avril Maxwell, one of three world winners of this competition in the past.

Date: Tuesday August 30th
Venue: The Occidental, 6 – 8 Vulcan Lane Auckland
Time: Competition starts at 2.00 – 4.00 pm

The 9-Step Pouring Ritual:

1. The Purification - Use a clean and rinsed branded glass
2. The Sacrifice - Open the tap in one quick action and let the first drops of beer flow away
3. The Liquid Alchemy Begins - Hold the glass just under the tap without touching it at a 45° angle
4. The Head, although ‘Crown’ would be more appropriate - Lower the glass to allow the natural formationof the foam head
5. The Removal - Close the tap quickly and move the glass away so beer doesn’t drip into the glass
6. The Beheading - While the head foams up and overflows the side of the glass, smooth it gently with a head cutter
7. The Cleansing - Clean the bottom and sides of the glass
8. The Two Finger Rule - The right amount of foam is usually about two fingers
9. The Bestowal - Present the beer on a clean beer coaster with the logo facing the consumer.
