Carbon footprinting – revised BSI Standard available free

Carbon footprinting – revised BSI Standard available free

The British Standards Institute (BSI) has published a revised edition of the Specification for the assessment of the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services PAS 2050:2011. PAS 2050 is the BSI Standard used by organisations internationally to calculate the carbon footprint of their goods and services. The 2011 revision makes the PAS 2050 methodology more relevant and accessible to a wider range of organisations.

The revision of PAS 2050 addresses some key issues raised by the international carbon footprinting community, and the experiences of PAS 2050 users since the Standard was first published in 2008. The 2011 revision:

• clarifies ambiguities that have become apparent in the application of the Standard

• takes account of advances in knowledge and understanding that have emerged since PAS 2050 was first published

• better reflects the way organisations use the Standard

• encourages greater use of the PAS 2050 methodology

• aligns the PAS 2050 methodology as much as possible with other internationally recognised footprint methods.

• Some of the significant changes arising from the revision are as follows.

• Provision for the development and application of ‘supplementary requirements’ to enable more specific greenhouse gas emissions assessment within sectors or product groups.

• The inclusion of emissions from biogenic sources (for example, biomass).

• Greater clarity on the treatment of recyclable material.
