McCashins Scoops Up the Bling from the IBC

McCashins Scoops Up the Bling from the IBC

Nelson, New Zealand McCashin’s Brewery, makers of the Stoke and Stoke Bomber beer ranges, was awarded eight medals in the International Beer Challenge in London, England in July 2012.

The International Beer Challenge (IBC) is held in London each year. In its 16th year, this premier beer competition judges over 60 beer brands from more than 30 countries, with huge names like Fullers and Samuel Adams jostling with tiny craft brewers for these prestigious medals.

It was therefore a great honour for McCashin’s Brewery from Stoke, Nelson to receive such an astounding result. The highest honour was a Gold Medal for their Stoke Gold ale. With only around six per cent of the 400 entries receiving Gold Medals, Stoke Gold ale stands amongst the top beers in the world. Seven additional Stoke beers won awards, with Stoke Amber and Stoke IPA received Silver Medals, and 2 Stoke and Stoke Lager bringing home Bronze Medals. The newer Stoke Bomber range also received three Bronze Medals for the Oatmeal Stout, Smoky Ale and Kiwi Pale Ale.

McCashin’s Brewery is proud that their range of distinctly New Zealand craft brews faired so well on the international stage. Andrew Murray, General Manager, states “Our philosophy is to produce a range of premium quality and flavoursome hand crafted beers using only the finest natural ingredients without any added chemicals, preservatives or sugar.”

While the brewery’s production has more scale than many of our fellow industry colleagues in terms of New Zealand brewers, they are absolutely committed to the craft. Emma McCashin says, “Our local beer writers Fritz Kuckuck and Maria Grau like to point out that by US standards, all of New Zealand’s beer production fits within the definition of a ‘small’ brewery. But apart from scale, we are craft because we are committed to taste first and foremost. With beer - you get out what you put in and taste just can't be faked.” Clearly the IBC judges agree.

Some breweries have been known to enter special products in order to increase their medal chances. Luckily for McCashin’s Brewery fans, when they pick up a Stoke six or twelve pack, or ask for a pint, they will get the same award winning products that the judges selected, because the beers entered are production samples.

These latest awards follow similar success at the Australian International Beer Awards in May, with McCashin’s Brewery beers bringing home 6 medals.

McCashin’s Brewery beers are available through supermarkets, liquor stores and on tap across New Zealand and throughout Australia via Dan Murphy’s stores.
