Massive drop in unemployed
Figures released from the Ministry of Social Development show a 19% fall in the number of people in the Manawatu region registered for the unemployment benefit in June 2012 compared with June 2011. Nationally, the number of people registered for the unemployment benefit declined by 12%.
In June 2012 there were 1,059 people registered for the unemployment benefit in the region, a decline of 244 people from June 2011.
Palmerston North Mayor Jono Naylor has welcomed this news saying a major aim of the Council is to increase the number of businesses and jobs that are available to residents.
“While the recent decline in unemployment is encouraging, it would be great to see further declines in the number of people out of work.”
The proportion of the working age population registered for the unemployment benefit was 1.2% in the region compared with 1.5% for New Zealand.
The number of people receiving other benefits also declined.

3%.

1%.
