Fiesta time on K’Road

Fiesta time on K’Road

New Zealand’s most popular Mexican restaurant, Mexicali Fresh, is bringing a little Cali to K’Road and opening its fourth store in the iconic Auckland neighbourhood this month.

The store will be based in the innovative Ironbank building at 150 Karangahape Road and will serve the full complement of California-style Mexican favourites like burritos, quesadillas, nachos and taco salads. Everything is chopped, grilled or roasted daily using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. The fresh ingredients combined with an impressive array of ice cold Mexican beer, frosty margaritas and tequila creates a winning combination.

This successful restaurant concept provides consumers with the freshest, fastest and most exciting California-style Mexican food in New Zealand. The K’Road opening makes it store number four in Auckland for Mexicali Fresh, with plans for further expansion over the coming months.

Mexicali Fresh CEO Cindy Buell says the family cut their teeth in the restaurant trade in California in the 80s and 90s before moving to New Zealand to live seven years ago. The family-owned restaurants are managed by her two adult sons Tyler and Conor, who have been around the family’s restaurants since they could walk.

“There was only one Mexican restaurant in Auckland when we arrived and we saw a huge opportunity to bring our years of restaurant experience and a bit of California culture here,” says Cindy. “We opened the doors to the first Mexicali Fresh store in Auckland’s Princes Wharf in 2005. Since then, Mexican food has experienced a surge of popularity in New Zealand and we’re proud to have championed that.”

Mexicali Fresh District Manager, Tyler Kerlin, says; “We believe the K’ Road location is a great fit with what we offer – which is not only the fastest and freshest Mexican around, but the most flavoursome too, with great customer service to boot.”

“K’Road is laid back cool, a melting pot of cultures, fashion and art; it’s seriously playful just like Mexicali Fresh. We look forward to meeting our new business neighbours, along with new and old customers alike over the coming weeks,” he adds.

The chain has plans to open further stores in Auckland and throughout the country, with property options currently being explored for stores in West Auckland and the North Shore.

To celebrate the new store opening, Students, Gold Card holders and K’ Road businesses are entitled to 10% off food at the Mexicali Fresh Karangahape Road store on presentation of the relevant ID or business card.

The Mexicali Fresh Story

Mexicali Fresh CEO Cindy Buell and her husband John have been running the hottest Mexican restaurants in the States since 1979. In 2005 they moved to New Zealand with their two sons Conor and Tyler Kerlin, who are the driving force behind the California-style Mexicali Fresh brand in New Zealand.

The family opened the first Mexicali Fresh store at Princes Wharf in Auckland a month after arriving and have been chipping away at popularising Mexican food in New Zealand ever since. The second Mexicali Fresh store launched on Nuffield Street in Newmarket in 2006 and the third at Botany Town Centre in 2010, with plans for further expansion in the near future.

The philosophy behind Mexicali Fresh is to deliver the freshest, best and most exciting food to meet the demands of today’s fast-paced lifestyle, while staying true to the food. Which is why theirs is the best Mexican you’ll find anywhere.

The wisdom and experience of 33 years in the restaurant business means the team behind Mexicali Fresh know the importance of consistency, quality, cleanliness and service. Meats are grilled and roasted, margaritas are mixed daily and salads and salsas are hand-chopped to give the freshest, most flavoursome meal you can get. While the great tunes, surf videos and selection of Mexican tequila and beer provides that Californian holiday feeling without ever leaving town.
