Media release

Google tops web site use in New Zealand

Google has the most visited web site in New Zealand.

A Horizon Research poll on the websites Kiwi’s use most presented the usual suspects and a few surprises.

Of the 3055, 18+ New Zealanders who participated in the survey 81% follow the world trend and use Google, making its search engine the most used website in the country.

Online auction and trading site TradeMe was a few clicks behind with 74.8%.

Surprisingly this New Zealand creation took social media site Facebook’s usual position of second place in the website popularity stakes.

According to studies in the US, UK, Australia, Facebook and Google are neck and neck with first and second ranking. In New Zealand however, Facebook has moved rank to third with 73%.

Internet banking is fourth, with 62%.

And Fairfax online news site, Stuff is the leading choice for online news with 51%, followed by TVNZ with 35.9% and the Herald online with 35%.

Results demonstrate that Kiwis’ thirst for knowledge is on par with retail therapy, with 33.1% using Wikipedia and 32% browsing the online shopping sites.

Despite Google’s dominance as a search site, Hotmail with 39.9% of adults visiting each month beats Google’s G mail on 30.9%.

Niche websites such as subjective and personal blogs, dating and technology sites shared the lower end of national interest with under 10% engagement.

Which of these other websites have you visited or used in the past 30 days?
