AMP raises over $25,000 for Barnardos

AMP New Zealand has this week donated a total of $25,654.84 to Barnardos, which provides services and support for disadvantaged families and children. The staff-led fundraising efforts reflect AMP’s strong community-focused ethos, a legacy of its history as a mutual founded by civic-minded people who wanted to help families withstand the financial stress of a tragedy by encouraging people to take out life insurance policies.

Of the total, just over $20,000 was raised by AMP’s Quality Adviser Network (QAN) and Adviser Sales team through a series of fundraising activities around the country throughout 2012, with the other $5,000 donated by the AMP Foundation as part of its overall commitment to help vulnerable children in 2013.

“The initial target we set was to raise $10,000, but our team showed so much enthusiasm and commitment to the cause that they ended up raising more than double that, which is a fantastic result,” said Nick Scarlett AMP General Manager of QAN and Adviser Sales.

The donation will go towards Barnardos services, including its free 0800 What’s Up telephone counselling service for children aged between 5 and 18. The helpline answers over 125,000 calls each year and more than 95% of its funding comes from fundraising efforts. The service deals with a range of issues affecting children and young people, including bullying, peer and family relationships, drug and alcohol abuse, and mental health.

Barnardos Chief Executive Jeff Sanders said: “As a charity we rely on fundraising and support such as this. We’re really grateful for AMP’s support and this donation will fund hundreds of hours of phone counselling for children and young people all over New Zealand.”

Funds raised by AMP and its adviser businesses were carried out through a number of events and activities in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, including a charity quiz night, a ‘master chef’ baking fundraiser and auctions.

“We’re proud to support Barnardos, which provides an invaluable service for New Zealand families and children,” said Mr Scarlett.
