$60 million in fuel savings earned by NZ motorists with AA Smartfuel

New Zealand motorists have earned $60 million worth of fuel savings since AA Smartfuel was introduced in 2011.

Easter is often the last gasp of the warm weather, an echo of summer as we lurch towards winter, and as such is one of the busiest holiday periods on New Zealand roads.

With the price of petrol sustained in excess of $2 per litre, fuel costs have become a very real holiday expense that often must be factored in as part of the budget impacts the decision process.

AA Smartfuel General Manager Ian Sutcliffe says fuel costs contribute to people making some tough decisions and this can have an impact on holiday choices for the family.

“Discounts achieved through AA Smartfuel can assist with the holiday budget and actually make the dollars motorists spend on fuel take them further,” he says.

Kiwi motorists using the AA Smartfuel programme have earned $60 million worth of fuel savings since it began 17 months ago – on average more than $3.5 million every month.

About 70% of customers collecting AA Smartfuel savings are using them to save on fuel costs at the pump.

“AA Smartfuel cardholders have the opportunity to make significant fuel savings that can make a real difference to the cost of their Easter journey if they are savvy about where they shop.

“There are more than 1800 places in New Zealand where fuel discounts can be earned simply by swiping either an AA Membership card or an AA Smartfuel card,” Mr Sutcliffe says.

“And for people who shop at a number of participating retailers, fuel savings can build up rapidly.

“Many cardholders earn enough in fuel discounts to cover the cost of filling their tank completely. If motorists do this in the weeks ahead of a holiday, it can make a real difference.”

AA Smartfuel works best when cardholders swipe their card at every opportunity with participating retailers. Every discount offered by a retailer is loaded on to the cardholder’s account, so the discount available increases with every swipe.

Cardholders redeem their fuel discount at participating BP and Caltex service stations.

“Holidays can be expensive, but AA Smartfuel offers all motorists the same thing – real savings on the total cost of fuel.”
