Farmers Opens New Napier Store

Media Release

6 June 2013

Farmers Opens New Napier Store

Farmers Trading Company officially opens the doors to its new state-of-the-art store in Napier today bringing with it a world class shopping experience - and the city’s first escalator.

The 4,300 square metre, two level store features the very latest in department store design, including air conditioning, a customer lift for added convenience, larger fitting areas and service counters.

The modern layout provides shoppers with more variety in men’s and women’s fashion apparel and prestige cosmetic brands including Clarins and Dr Hauschka - previously not available in the Emerson Street store.

Napier customers also get access to a Stevens store conveniently located on the ground floor.

Farmers managing director Rod McDermott is delighted with the new store which he says is not only world class but also in keeping with the city’s unique design and art deco heritage.

“We engaged Napier-based Paris Magdalinos Architects at the start of the design process to ensure the store would fit the city’s unique design and to retain key heritage aspects of the original buildings,” says McDermott.

“We’ve kept the façade intact on the Odeon Theatre and Callinicos Building and retained the ceiling window and unique stained glass display window from the Callinicos Building. It’s been 18 months in the making and we couldn’t be happier with the final design.”

All 50 staff from the Emerson Street store transfer across under the leadership of store manager, Tom Dickinson. Dickinson has worked for Farmers for the last 28 years gaining wide store experience in a range of roles throughout New Zealand.

“Today’s opening represents the culmination of a lot of hard work by many staff and others in the Napier community. It’s creating a real buzz in the city and I’m so excited to be part of it.

“As a retailer, customer service is everything. The new layout enables us to provide customers with a cutting-edge, world class department store,” says Dickinson.

The Napier store opening is the first of a number of new Farmers stores to open this year with others planned for Hamilton and Wanganui together with the refurbishment of the existing Farmers store in Blenheim.
