Upper Moutere Brewery continues winning streak

Upper Moutere Brewery continues winning streak

Successful NZ Beer Awards for Townshend Brewery

In a small pub in Igls, just outside Innsbruck, Austria, there were whoops of delight from the Townshend’s clan on the news that Townshend Brewery had snagged a bagful of awards at the prestigious NZ Beer Awards. For the second year in a row, Townshend’s craft beer has been awarded a trophy winner – not once by twice. Trophies were secured for the aromatic Oldhams Tap Riwaka Pilsner, which was wet-hopped with local Riwaka hops, and the Old House ESB, which has set the standard for hand-pulled ale in New Zealand for some time. Astonishingly, the Upper Moutere micro-brewery ranked 2nd equal in the Champion Brewery Award – shared along with the giant Lion Brewery. Throw in a handful of silver and bronzes, and it was a good holiday present for the brewer.

Martin Townshend, Owner – Brewer said “It had been good to have a holiday – but this news was the icing on the cake”. While I love brewing in almost splendid isolation in the Upper Moutere, it is nice to get some industry recognition of my work.”

It has been an eventful year in the brewery – with new equipment expanding the brewery capacity, and some collaboration brews with Liberty, Dales Brewing and Brewracracy impressing critics and fans alike. Customers should also watch their favourite beer shelves for the release of a new-look Townshend Brewery branding in the next couple of months. What won’t be changing, however, is the quality of the beer from this innovative and award-winning local brewery.
