Waikato man gets $10,000 to “Sleep on the Job”

Waikato University security guard, Cam Strother has secured his ‘dream job’ – working for bed manufacturer, Sealy, as a ‘Sleep Ambassador’.

The role sees him receive a $10,000 month-long opportunity to literally sleep on the job.

Mr Strother was today announced as the successful candidate following a nationwide search, beating more than 400 other hopefuls.

As part of the ‘job’, Mr Strother is required to keep a sleep journal, offer product feedback and blog about his experience.

In return, he will get a slumber package worth more than $10,000. It includes a top-of-the-range Sealy Posturepedic bed worth $5,699, linen from Wallace Cotton, an iPad and $100 a night for the month of September.

Mr Strother says he has a unique and varied sleeping schedule. “I’m a night time security guard and I work some odd hours, often right through the night so I’m very grateful to have won this opportunity.

“I grew up in Japan where I slept on the floor always dreaming of having my own bed one day. I also had back surgery last year so I really need a good bed,” he says.

Sealy New Zealand marketing manager, Jenni Gaze, is thrilled for Mr Strother. “We received more than 400 entries for the Sealy Sleep Ambassador campaign and we believe Cam is definitely the most deserving candidate.”
