Telecom Assistance Following Typhoon Haiyan

Telecom New Zealand announced today that it would credit customers for the cost of calls and texts made to the Philippines in the lead-up to and immediately after Typhoon Haiyan.

The credit will apply to direct dial calls (00 and 0161) made from home phones and mobiles, to land lines and mobile phones in the Philippines from midnight (0:00:01) on Friday 8 November to midnight (11:59.59) tonight, Tuesday 12 November.

Chief Executive Retail Chris Quin said that many Telecom customers were concerned about loved ones in Philippines, and so had called them over the past few days to make sure they were safe. He hoped that by crediting customers the cost of these calls he could spare them the extra worry of a large phone bill at the end of the month.

Mr Quin said that customers did not need to do anything to get the calling and texting credits. Telecom would ensure they were automatically applied to customers’ accounts on either the November or December bills, depending on customers’ bill cycles. Prepaid credits will be applied as soon as possible.
