New report reveals new insights for NZ manufacturing

Media release

25 February 2014

New report reveals new insights for New Zealand manufacturing

A new report being launched on 26 February reveals common traits of New Zealand’s most successful manufacturers, how important the manufacturing sector is to our economy and how it measures up internationally.

Independent researchers Castalia, who compiled the report on behalf of ManufacturingNZ (a division of BusinessNZ), interviewed some of New Zealand’s most successful high growth manufacturing firms to see if their lessons and experience can be applied to the whole of manufacturing.

These firms provided an insightful picture of modern manufacturing – including factors such as family/private ownership, market knowledge, niche domination, being export orientated and going beyond just producing goods.

The report makes recommendations to Government on what policy would best support a vibrant and thriving manufacturing sector.

The Hon Steven Joyce, Minister for Economic Development, will be attending the launch and giving his response to the report’s findings.

Catherine Beard, Executive Director of ManufacturingNZ, says “The case studies in this report reveal common factors which make New Zealand manufacturers competitive. Talent-driven innovation is a key driver of competitiveness. Addressing the skills shortage was also raised when firms were asked for the top public policy issues they would raise with the Government. It is fitting that AUT Business School is hosting the launch of this report.”

Alex Sundakov, Chief Executive of Castalia, says “The manufacturing sector remains a key part of New Zealand’s economic future. It is the largest contributor to the New Zealand economy, and is holding ground compared to other OECD countries. This study revealed how the changing nature of business requires a modern interpretation of manufacturing. This includes successful manufacturers reshaping their businesses by providing services.”

The report is being launched on 26 February at 4:30pm at AUT City Campus, 42 Wakefield Street – Room WG 308, Te Iringa Room, Sir Paul Reeves Building, Mezzanine.
