2degrees extends 4G to Wellington

2degrees has extended its 4G footprint, today flicking the switch on its fourth generation mobile network in central Wellington.

Dubbed the next generation network, 4G can theoretically deliver data speeds of up to 150Mbps – more than 10 times faster than standard 3G connections.

Over half of Wellington City is now covered by 2degrees’ 4G network. The company today also switches its 4G network on in greater Auckland to cover more than two-thirds of Auckland. The company plans to launch 4G in Christchurch at the end of September and Hamilton in October.

2degrees launched its 4G network in parts of central Auckland in June.

2degrees’ Chief Technology Officer Mike Davies says the rollout is well ahead of schedule.

“We have a unique advantage of having the latest network technology, thus the addition of 4G is relatively straightforward. The first stage of our rollout is on track to being achieved well within the timeframes we set and we are now planning the rollout to other regions in the coming year,” he says.

Mike says 2degrees customers are taking full advantage of 4G.

“With 4G capable devices now readily available, coupled with people’s growing need to do more and be more productive on their phones, we have certainly seen a significant rise in the amount of data usage on our network.

"Whilst data usage on our network has continued to double each year, we have seen a significant increase since we launched 4G in June with 4G customers using 70% more data on an average day compared to those using 3G."

2degrees continues to trial other technology to support its customers’ insatiable demand for data including a WIFI trial in Wellington and a 4G trial on 700MHz in central Auckland.
