Countdown wins big at Steak of Origin

Countdown has been declared Supreme Brand Champion at the 2015 Steak of Origin awards.

The Awards, which have been held for the past 13 years, are an annual event run by New Zealand Beef and Lamb to select the best steak producer in the country.

Countdown’s North Island Meat Plant, which supplies approximately 400,000 kgs (or 600,000 packets) of meat to all the North Island Countdown stores each week, submitted their, now award winning, Countdown Angus Beef.

Countdown’s Meat Division Manager, Mark Baker, says the award is great recognition of the top quality meats that Countdown offers their customers.

“We work hard to make sure our stores offer our customers top quality products. We submitted our angus beef because we have always considered it top quality – it’s great to see that other people think so too.”

Steaks submitted to the competition go through rigorous testing before the finalists and then winners are announced. A panel of food writers and chefs judge the finalists on aroma, texture, flavour, tenderness and juiciness.

Countdown North Island placed first in the Best of Brand: Wholesale and Food Service and then went on to take the Supreme Brand Champion Award.

Countdown South Island took out third place in the Best of Brand: Retail Award.
