Coromandel, Akaroa and Dunedin butchers come out on top at NZPork Awards

26 JULY 2016 – New Zealand’s best pork products have been crowned with top honours going to butcheries in Coromandel, Akaroa and Dunedin.

The 9th annual 100% New Zealand Pork, Bacon & Ham Awards were held in Christchurch last night

The Competitions celebrate New Zealand’s finest home-grown pork products and assist consumers to identify and appreciate sustainable pork, bacon and ham which is PigCare™ Accredited*.

The Competitions support local pig farmers, who raise pork solely for New Zealanders.

Three supreme winners took top honours across each Competition.

Thames Valley Bacon in the Coromandel was crowned with Best 100% New Zealand Bacon with their Bushman’s Shoulder Bacon. Akaroa Butchery and Deli on Banks Peninsula took out Best 100% New Zealand Ham with their Manuka Honey Cured Ham while Dunedin’s Agora Butchery and Deli topped the 100% Best New Zealand Pork Competition with its Pulled Pork entry.

NZPork Chair Ian Carter says that the awards celebrate New Zealand Pork’s farm to plate story.

“It is great to be able to feature the best of 100% New Zealand Pork, Bacon and Ham for the ninth year running. As a farmer myself, seeing and tasting the exceptional small goods entered into the competition each year really highlights the wonderful story of New Zealand’s pork industry.”

The event celebrates the craft involved with turning 100% New Zealand grown pork into mouth-watering bacon, ham and pork products. Proof that the expertise and care that goes into PigCare™ New Zealand grown pigs deliver a quality, tasty product.

The competition saw 210 entries from nearly 50 expert butchers nationwide.

Each entry was scrutinised by an independent panel of 33 judges comprising of leading chefs, food connoisseurs and master butchers.

Head judge Anita Sarginson says every year she looks forward to celebrating the craftsmanship of some of New Zealand’s best butchers.

“It’s wonderful to see New Zealand pork showcased over all three Competitions, it’s obvious that there’s some really hard, honest work that’s gone into the winning entries. I’m looking forward to buying and enjoying some of these top products and I encourage all kiwis to do so too.”
