Famous faces serve up Pita Pit’s Diabetes NZ Choice Range

MEDIA RELEASE

Famous faces serve up Pita Pit’s Diabetes NZ Choice Range to round out Diabetes Action Month

Some of New Zealand’s most well-known sports stars and politicians will be serving up lunch at Pita Pit stores around the country today, to mark the last day of Diabetes Action Month and celebrate the launch of Pita Pit’s new Diabetes NZ Choice Menu.

Black Sticks player Gemma Flynn, NZ Triathlete Andrea Hewitt, Labour MP Louisa Wall, and Silver Fern Leana de Bruin will each be behind the counter at their local Pita Pit store, promoting the new menu and supporting those with diabetes and all New Zealanders to make healthier food choices.

An official partner of Diabetes New Zealand, Pita Pit’s new Diabetes NZ Choice Range allows people with diabetes, and anyone wanting to eat healthily, a quick and easy way to identify foods on the Pita Pit menu that will suit their nutritional needs.

“Food and nutrition is a critical component in helping people to live well, and a healthier diet is one of the factors that can help decrease the risk of people developing type 2 diabetes, and can help in the management of both type 1 and type 2.” emphasised Duane Dalton, Director of Pita Pit in New Zealand.

“We have an important role to play in helping to educate Kiwis about diabetes by providing the right types of information in order to make good food choices. We hope the Diabetes NZ Choice Menu in-store will make it even easier for people to make the best food decisions for them."

All 103 Pita Pit stores around the country will also be offering customers the opportunity to ‘round up’ their purchase total to the nearest dollar. Pita Pit will match the public donation, with proceeds going to Diabetes New Zealand.

Diabetes New Zealand chief executive Steve Crew says, “Pita Pit’s range of fresh vegetables, grilled proteins and salad options are in-keeping with our healthy plate promotion and Pita Pit can provide choices suited not only for people with diabetes but also for those wanting to make healthier food selections.”

Diabetes is our nation’s largest and fastest growing health crisis, affecting over a quarter of a million New Zealanders. One in four New Zealanders are also estimated to have prediabetes and, in many cases, they could prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes through changing a combination of lifestyle factors including nutritional eating and regular exercise.

The ‘Diabetes NZ Choice’ symbol is promoted throughout Pita Pit stores nationwide and will help people with diabetes and pre-diabetes to easily identify which Pita Pit products are more suited to them and even those just wanting to follow a healthy, nutritious diet.
