$100m of Scholarships Available for School Leavers

$100m of Scholarships Available for School Leavers

MoneyHub has launched New Zealand’s first free-to-use scholarships index which details every funding opportunity available to Year 13 students. Available 24/7 on any device, MoneyHub presents scholarships by university, region, company and ethnicity. The page proved a hit in initial trials and is now being introduced to schools across the country.

Sunday 6 May 2018

MoneyHub’s Senior Researcher Christopher Walsh said “We are thrilled to be able to make this resource available to every high school student in New Zealand in a first for education”.

“Our aim was to make scholarship opportunities accessible for everyone and provide schools with a robust and reliable resource for their students. We found the existing approach was complex – students didn’t have a free resource they could access independently, and the existing paid scholarship databased can be tricky to navigate. With MoneyHub’s dedicated scholarship resource, every student and parent can discover what scholarships are available from the comfort of their phone, tablet or computer, 24 hours a day.”

“We understand the existing methods of obtaining scholarship information are rather inefficient at the moment. From scouring newspaper adverts, checking school newsletters, asking university career offices and word-of-mouth, there’s a lot of leg work for a student already focused on their studies. The current paid subscription platform also has its issues – not every school subscribes to it and the hours and means of access are limited to a single computer terminal. We wanted to put the power with students and parents, and make sure all scholarship funding for tertiary study was on an equal playing field”.

“MoneyHub appreciated that while a fee-free scheme was in place, students were facing higher than ever living costs with record rents and food prices. The more money available to a new university student on day 1, the easier student life will be”.

“We really encourage Maori and Pacific Island students to apply for scholarships – many scholarships go unawarded every year because of a lack of awareness of the opportunities. How-to-apply guidance has also been included, equipping students with everything they need to know about making sure they get to the top of the pile”.

“MoneyHub researched every corner of New Zealand to come up with a robust and complete scholarship list. Exclusively for Year 13 students, scholarships are presented by university, region, ethnicity and then by private donor. This allows students to take advantage of local and private company funding opportunities, as well as scholarships specific to universities. As closing dates occur throughout the year, students are advised to make a shortlist of relevant scholarships and plan well in advance for completing the application”.

“We want to remind students that scholarships are not just for those with flawless NCEA results – our analysis showed that many scholarships were awarded to all-rounders and those who showed good promise outside of the classroom”.

“We are delighted to see the generosity of New Zealand companies, universities and individuals working together to make it possible for more hard-working Kiwi kids to go to University. Our estimate is that the value of scholarships awarded to every graduating Year 13 year group could be as high as one hundred million dollars when you take into account the multiple year payments many scholarships grant”.

“Previously such a resource was unavailable. We were contacted by several schools as we built the resource – these are schools that had found our scholarship data though Google or from Facebook. Each of these wanted to list it on their respective school’s website and/or promote it in their newsletters. Our team is now seeing high schools throughout New Zealand use this resource which is, and will always be, free to use”.

“The resource page would be updated numerous times per year, with new scholarships added as they are announced. MoneyHub wished to publicise the scholarship resource to encourage students from all over New Zealand to get organised in advance and apply”.
