Barfoot & Thompson Appoints New Director

Barfoot & Thompson, New Zealand’s largest privately owned real estate company and a market leader, has today announced the appointment of Henry Barfoot as a Director, effective from 01 June 2025.

Henry, who is the grandson of founder Val Barfoot, has been embedded within the business for over 16 years. Starting in residential sales, he then moved to commercial sales and leasing, before embarking on his journey to leadership first as a Relief Branch Manager then working his way up to Manager of the Milford branch, a position he’s held for nearly seven years. During this time, he has led the team with distinction and fostered a deep connection with the wider community.

He will continue in his role as Manager of the Milford branch, as well as serving as a Director, a dual role that is not without precedent, and echoes the pathway of his uncle, Chris Barfoot, who managed the Remuera branch while also serving as a Director.

Henry, whose father Garth and sister Kiri have both also previously sat on the Board, acknowledges that his new role comes with a big responsibility as he follows in the footsteps of those whose dedication helped shape the company.

“Taking on this directorship is both a personal milestone and a powerful opportunity. I’m excited to bring a fresh perspective while continuing the legacy of those who helped lay the groundwork for where we are today.

We’re proudly an intergenerational family company, and our goal is to continue to build our legacy for future generations. But it's not just continued business success – it’s about how we do business. It’s about how we treat our people, how we treat our clients, and how we contribute to the community."

Commenting on the appointment, Managing Director, Peter Thompson, said this is a significant moment for Henry, his family, and the wider business:

"The appointment of a new Director to the company is an incredibly special time for both families, and our people within Barfoot & Thompson. We welcome Henry to the position and look forward to working alongside him more closely in the months and years to come."

Henry joins current Directors Peter Thompson and Stephen Barfoot. Barfoot & Thompson has over 2,700 people across 85+ branches, including over 1,800 salespeople. It sells around 4 in every 10 homes sold in Auckland and manages more than 20,000 rental properties across three regions (Auckland, Northland & Waikato).
